Text: Public Speaking for Personal Success by Hanna and Gibson (Brown & Benchmarck)
Objective:
The primary objective of this
course is to enable each student to improve in his or her
demonstration of effective speaking skills.
Grading:
One-half of the final
grade in this class is be determined by an average of six graded
speaking assignments. One fourth of the final grade is to be based on the mid-term
examination and the last fourth on the final examination .
Requirements: The student is to read the assigned text as
directed and to participate in class discussions.
The student is to provide brief critiques of speeches given by classmates. The student is
to
hand
to the professor an outline of his or her speech on the day of delivery. The student is to
prepare and deliver speeches in the following categories: introduction (not graded),
personal
experience, informative, demonstration, persuasion, special occasion, and impromptu .

Week One- Discuss Chapters 1,2,3,4, Paired Introduction Speeches
Week Two- Discuss Chapters 14, 8 & 9
Week Three- Informative Speeches
Week Four- Discuss Chapters 6 & 7
Week Five- Personal Experience Speeches
Week Six- Mid-Term Exam
Week Seven- Discuss Chapters 10, 11, 12
Week Eight- Demonstration Speeches
Week Nine- Discuss 13 & 15
Week Ten - Expressive Speaking
Week Eleven - Persuasive Speeches
Week Twelve - Discuss Chapter 16 & Impromptu Speeches ( random order)
Week Thirteen-Special Occasion Speeches
Week Fourteen- Semester Review
Week Fifteen- Final Examination
