Modeling Guidelines

Dr. Diane Howard

1.  Get photographs. They can be in the following styles: natural-looking; athletic; headshot; or with an animal,
friend, child, props etc.  Find a reputable photographer. Check them out. Look at samples of
their work. Take a friend with you to the photo shoot. Do not allow the photographer to do things with
you about which you do not feel right or comfortable..

2.  Get a licensed agent. They should have their business license visibly posted in their office.
Check them out with the Better Business Bureau. Do not give any up-front money. Find an
agent with whom you feel comfortable and like-minded.

3.  If you are tall, 5'9" and taller, you might pursue fashion modeling. If you are shorter and fit, you might
want to look into athletic modeling. If you have an enthusiastic personality, you might want to go into
     commercial or catalog modeling.

4.  Be careful with signing contracts. If you sign a non-exclusive contract, you can work with multiple
     agents. Read the fine print.

5.  Modeling is usually supplemental, part-time work for teens and young people..

Always be careful in working with new agencies. Don't give money or credit card numbers up-front. Do not pay to meet, read, or audition.  If you  believe that you have been the victim of a scam, you can file a complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/.   The State Attorney General should also be notified. Mastercard has free information on Scams and Flim-Flams at 1-800-999-5156. A watchdog group at www.fraud.org/internet/intset.htm also keeps track of several illegal money making schemes. The Better Business Bureau advises caution when dealing with talent/modeling agencies. See http://www.license.state.tx.us/databases.htm for
