Internships may be paid or unpaid, local, regional, national, or international.

Here are some paid national internships. http://www.dianehoward.com/internships,apprenticeships.htm

Purpose- The goal of the intern is to observe, first-hand, day-to-day functions and operations of the organization he or she is serving.  The intern is to work on consequential projects and to provide meaningful service to the organization.

Guidelines-
The intern should have completed 60 semester hours before registering for an internship.
The intern is to have a GPA or no less than 2.5, preferably 3.0 or better.
The intern's duties are to be negotiated with the employer, UMHB faculty, and intern.
The employer will identify on-the-job supervisors of the student intern.
The intern will have a faculty sponsor. The faculty sponsor will have contact with the intern, employer,
       and supervisors.
The intern is to have the approval of an academic advisor and departmental chairperson.
The intern is to enroll for UMHB courses for credit prior to the internship period.
The intern is not to enroll for more that 12 semester hours of internship credits without the approval of
an academic advisor, department chairperson, and dean.
The intern's advisor will outline courses, presentations, papers, and other internship requirements
that a student intern is to fulfill before grades or credit is given.

Log-The intern will keep a daily log with simple one- or two-line entries that identify daily tasks, accomplishments, hours worked, and any problems encountered. An internship is a laboratory class. Each intern must work a total of 60 contact hours per semester credit hour with the internship employer.  Therefore, to earn 3 semester hours of credit the student must work 180 contact hours in the internship.

Grading- The supervising  professor is to evaluate the intern's service and may collaborate with the employer to determine the intern's final grade.
