Dramatic Production (Lab)

Purpose of the Course: Students will perform and participate in a dramatic production. They are also to receive instruction and coaching in performance and technical theater skills.

Grading: Grading is based primarily on demonstrated skill and technique in performance. However, responsibility, dependability, effort, and time invested are also to be taken into consideration in the determination of the final grade. Technical theater design projects are also to be averaged into the final grade. Grades are to be averaged according to the following percentages: 25% class ( & workshop) attendance, 25 % assignments, and 50%- hands-on/involvement in an approved dramatic production.


Course Content: Students are to receive basic instruction in performance and designing make-up, costumes, props, sets, and lighting. Students are to be given technical theater, design assignments.

Learning Objectives:

Students will demonstrate performance and technical theater skills.

Students will attend technical theater workshops in Brindley Auditorium.

Student will be able to discuss factors to consider in designing costumes, make-up, lighting, props, and sets.

Students will be able to line and shade drawings for straight, middle age, and old age make-up.

Students will be able to identify standard lighting and set terminology.


Class Log:

Each Dramatic Production student must keep a log of hours invested in the production.. Dramatic Production is a laboratory class. Therefore, each student in this course must invest 1 ½ hours for every hour that he or she would invest in a lecture class. If a Dramatic Production student is earning 1 semester hour credit, he or she must invest 23 hours in Dramatic Production coursework by the end of the semester. If a Dramatic Production student is earning 2 semester hour credits, he or she must invest 45 hours by the end of the semester. If a student is earning 3 semester hour credits, he or she must invest 68 hours. If a student is earning 4 semester hour credits, he or she must invest 90 hours by the end of the semester.

Class Projects:

All projects will be based on the dramatic production scheduled for this semester or assigned play
.

1. Set Painting

Design the set for a scene in the play. Complete a step by step instruction guide on how to paint the set to simulate a particular texture, wood, stone etc. List all techniques and colors used. Justify why you used them. Provide a color rendering. Quality of the artwork is not part of the grade, however neatness, presentation and your overall efforts can have an impact on your grade. List all references.

2. Lighting Design

Design a basic lighting plot for a scene in the play for Hughes Auditorium.. Draw out the stage and divide it into 6 general areas indicating which lights you are assigning to each area. (Refer to your handout for an example) Indicate which scene in the play it is. Indicate what color gels you used and why. Include in the lighting plot the number of light fixtures both in front and
above
the stage in Hughes and what kind of light fixtures they are. This does not include the hall’s general illumination fixtures. Quality of the artwork is not part of the grade, however neatness, presentation and your overall efforts can have an impact on your grade. List all references.

3. Costume Design

Design a costume for a man and a woman. The design can be for any character in the play. A written explanation of why you selected the materials, colors, particular designs must be done and it must be accompanied by a color rendering. Quality of the artwork is not part of the grade, however neatness, presentation and your overall efforts can have an impact on your grade.List all references.

4. Makeup Design

Design the make-up for a middle-aged woman and for a middle-aged or old man.
Use the face in the handout as a template and color accordingly. Indicate all base, highlights, special colors and techniques used to achieve the effects of the make up design.Quality of the artwork is not part of the grade, however neatness, presentation and your overall efforts can have an impact on your grade. List all references.

 Note: If the project is late, it will affect your grade.
