Enhanced by Technology: Not Diminished
Dr. Diane Howard, McGraw-Hill
On Twitter are many examples of how
e-communication is fostering a sense of national and universal
citizenship and democracy. It is important that we understand
this dynamic in social media and networks. We must learn to use this
potential and power positively and constructively for the good of
our nation and peoples around the world. We must understand our
responsibilities as national and global citizens. Twitter is an
effective way to support the work of wise, mature leaders at local
to international levels.
I am appreciating being able to filter my Twitter account to
receive knowledgeable information in valuable documents linked to
Tweets from good sources throughout our nation and world. As a
result, it has been my privilege to support significant work and
projects in our country and across the globe. For example, I am
using Twitter to receive valuable information about the following:
good film and visual media work,
world health,
national leaders,
humanitarian projects,
higher ed., national
security, military
issues, current
research,
outreach programs... I
have used Twitter search
engines to find valuable information.
Having carefully configured my Twitter account, I receive Tweets
that have the following characteristics: substantive, enlightening,
inspirational, relational, positive, constructive, helpful, civil,
and supportive. I have organized my Twitter site to receive Tweets
from role model communicators with good bios and links.
I do not want to receive/hear trivial/mundane communications about
what someone did in everyday, private life-unless it has universal
ramifications, implications, applications... I have blocked
unsavory, immature, and condescending communications and
communicators. Each day, I enjoy receiving/reading
substantive Tweets with helpful links that are uplifting, edifying,
and global in perspective...

For more casual connections with friends, family, associates, I use
Facebook. With Facebook I enter the worlds of my students and young
people, who prefer it for social connection. For professional
knowledge and updates from the best communicators, journalists,
scholars, I use and enjoy Twitter.
On Twitter and other social e-networks/media I want to contribute
and follow what is constructive, positive, fair (looking at social
issues complexly).
Students and young people need guidance to use Twitter
effectively. It is not as popular with them as Facebook because it
can't be used effectively with light, everyday communications. Only
those who post substance will find ongoing followers outside circles
of friends. It can be an invaluable learning tool and can be used in
education. Instructors are already using it positively and
constructively. See
http://twitter.com/facultyfocus . I plan to use it in my
university courses.
http://dianehoward.com/syllabi.htm
I see more and more value and importance to education that
prepares students to viably communicate and participate in
e-communities. We must all learn how to constructively and
positively serve in the national and global e-societies. We all now
need to learn how to participate effectively in our visceral and
virtual worlds.
I recommend following Christian leaders on Twitter who
consistently post substantive, positive, gracious comments and
links. I appreciate reading Twitter posts from mature, wise,
Christian role models such as the following: http://twitter.com/RickWarren

How to Use Social Networks for Jobs
Use the Twitjobsearch. See
http://www.twitjobsearch.com/
I am finding that Twitter Lists are an excellent resource for
finding employment: full-time, part-time, free-lance, jobs that you
can do at home via e-technologies… I now have lists for finding
employment on my Twitter site,
http://twitter.com/drdianehoward . These categories include:
http://twitter.com/drdianehoward/voice-acting-speaking,
http://twitter.com/drdianehoward/jobs-texas,
http://twitter.com/drdianehoward/jobs-pr,

http://twitter.com/drdianehoward/jobs-veterans,
http://twitter.com/#/list/drdianehoward/writing,
http://twitter.com/#/list/drdianehoward/e-technologies ..
In seeking and negotiating any employment, always gain adequate
information to make an informed and careful decision. Check the
reputation and standing of the company with online research,
especially with the the Better Business Bureau,
http://www.bbb.org/ .
On Twitter performance communicators can search by categories such
as Casting, Talent Agencies. It is important for them to remember
the following.
Do not pay
casting directors, talent agencies.
Be careful
of casting scams.
Work with
licensed, legitimate casting directors, agencies.
You can also search for jobs in film or any industry on Twitter.

Tips for Using
Twitter Effectively, Wisely:
Tracking Twitter Impact:
Today there is a growing use of social e-networks, such as
Twitter, that operate on the Internet and cellphones, for
personal, professional, and social communication and connection.
Twitter, that is in the current forefront, is unique in that it
has evolved into a communication, news network that is
superseding blogs and other information sources. It seems that
most news agencies (print, television, e-technologies) are now
connecting to Twitter to bring readers, audiences to their
media. Movie producers are now distributing their films via
Twitter and other social networks. See
http://www.thesensationofsight.com/interact-with-us and
http://www.thesensationofsight.com/blog-comments, for
example.
Twitter is also significant in that is connecting insightful
social commentators from the general public to recognized,
national/international leaders. Never has there been such a
powerful, quick, easy way for little Davids to communicate with
and influence big Goliaths. Twitter is now a network that can
influence our world for good by enabling educated, mature,
balanced leaders and individuals from the general public to have
immediate access to influence local, national, international
leaders in debates of extreme consequence. Communicators,
local-international (especially those who are positive,
gracious, and wise) have unique opportunities on Twitter.com to
impact our nation and world for tremendous good.
Micro-blogging on Twitter is having a significant effect on
politics and political rallying. Now we have cyber-rallying, as
we have seen in Iran. Watch Mike Huckabee rally supporters on
Twitter.
Twitter is having a powerful, positive impact on
businesses (small and large), fund-raising...
...some businesses have discovered Twitter
...
effective way of communicating
with consumers. Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) says Twitter has produced $1
million in
revenue over the past year and a half through sale alerts. People who sign up to
follow Dell
on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available the
company’s Home Outlet
Store. They can click over to purchase the product or
forward the information to others...
http://digital.venturebeat.com/2008/12/15/twitter-has-made-dell-1-million-in-revenue/.
Twitter seems to have especially strong potential in
marketing to brand or niche customers.
...The potential for brands
is enormous. As we continue to
invest in the
constantly-evolving story of our
brands...Twitter will become
integral... for a targeted niche
(even a large one), it could be
a knockout... the service is
morphing due to how users want
to use it. What was once
initially designed to answer the
question “what are you doing?”,
has turned into a free-form
communications service where
people are having blurts of
shorthand conversations, sharing
links and information in
rapid-fire fashion…Personally, I
think Twitter is a pretty
powerful tool for anything
involving promotions, events and
communities... David Armono's
comments on

Twitter supersedes and is more
immediate, collective than
mailing lists.
There has has definitely been a media-shift
with many
hitching stars to Twitter.
Twitter is being used to
filter,
highlight information.
It is being used to collect and connect like-minded people
around the world.
