UMHB Honored with Award-Winning Collaborators
The Austin 48 Hour Film Project has honored The Big Plume Productions film team, which has included UMHB collaborators, with awards for Audience Favorite, Best Use of Character, Best Cinematography, and Best Acting Ensemble for their film, Hidden Places.
Performance Studies, Computer Graphics, and Cru Film Personnel at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, who have been collaborators with the Big Plume Productions Team, include the following: Dr. Diane Howard, Location Manager; Professor Donna Teel, Graphics Designer/Post-Production; Tara Felmly (Graduating, Senior, Performance Studies Major), Co-Producer; and Deann Graham (Cru Film and Computer Graphics Design Alumna), Unit Director. Other UMHB affiliates that have been members of the Big Plume Productions Team have been as follows: Adam Carrell (Cru Film and Art Alumnus), Scriptwriter; Justin Golden (Junior Performance Studies Major), Production Assistant; Johnny Vacca (Cru Film Talent), Craft Services and Costumes; and Jessica Stone (UMHB Performance Studies Collaborator), Cast and Costumes. Noell Felmly, Dallin Hullet, and Erin Farris (Cru film cast members) have been cast as leads in Hidden Places.
The 48 Hour Film Project is a global competition in which film crews produced and completed a film in two days at the end of June. Notable filmmakers, such as Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame, have been involved around the world in the 48 Hour Project. Austin's Big Plume Productions Team of possibly 50 cast and crew has involved some of Austin's finest veteran film pros. Step Rowe (Keene Studios) has served as a scriptwriter for Big Plume Productions’ 48 Hour Team.
George Oldziey, accomplished composer/arranger whose scoring credits have included Robert Rodriquez films (such as Spy Kids 3D: Game Over), is one of the many experienced members of the Big Plume Productions’ 48 Hour Team. Grandmaster Wonik Yi, martial arts choreographer for Robert Rodriguez, has been an honorary member of the Big Plume Productions Team.
Big Plume Productions Team producer is Angela Lee (formerly Production Manager and responsible for short film acquisitions for HBO). Ms. Lee, an Austin filmmaker, is at the heart of the Austin independent film world as facilitator of FilmAustin, an elite communications forum for Austin Film Professionals. She is responsible for the related Web site.
Over the weekend of June 23-25, twenty-six Austin teams were involved in the 48 Hour Film Project. The Big Plume Productions Team produced a beautiful, heart-felt film, Hidden Places, that was filmed at UMHB. It has been created as a lovely, compassionate story that focuses on two delicate characters. The themes of the film, that all people have a right to love and be loved, provides much inspirational food-for-thought. This film, like other Cru film projects, could be powerfully useful in educational and social services settings, as well as potently inspirational in movie theaters.
The Austin 48 Hour films have been screened for the general public, 48 Hour teams, and for professional film judges. In the first round of the competition at the Austin level, Hidden Places was selected in the Top Ten. Screenings of the Top Ten were held in Austin, July 15. Following the screenings, awards were given to the best films. Hidden Places has now been submitted to the Austin Film Festival. It has a good chance at playing at top international festivals in the future due to its recognized innovations, heart, substance, acting, and production artistry.
UMHB’s Cru Film Program that integrates courses and activities in Performance Studies and Computer Graphics Design (CGD) continues to produce campus documentaries, industrial training films for regional social services and businesses, and original films that are being submitted to independent film festivals. CGD and BITS courses in the new 18 credit hour Film Minor involve computer solutions, imaging, design, 3D modeling, digital video production, post-production, applied systems development, and internship credit. Performance Studies courses in the UMHB Film Minor involve film acting, screenwriting, film studies, distance communication and performance, and internships. For further information, contact Dr. Diane Howard, Performance Studies, Dept. of Communication and Media Studies or Professor Donna Teel, Computer Graphics, Dept. of Business Information Technology Systems (BITS).

Other Summer '06 Activities and Updates
The UMHB Performance Studies Program has collaborated with
regional artistic organizations for many years. This summer and fall, it
continues involvement with
Shakespearean productions at Tablerock
Amphitheater in
Salado, TX,
under the direction of David Dunlap. Dr. Howard, Director of Performance
Studies at UMHB has been cast as Lady Macbeth in the production of
Macbeth, for Oct. 7, 14, & 21, 2006. Mr.
Michael Fox, UMHB theater instructor, has been selected to play the role of Duncan. UMHB
Performance students, staff, and faculty have been invited to provide pre-show
Shakespearean material before the Oct. performances.
Further, Mr. Michael Fox, has been cast this summer in a national, SAG, Quiznos commercial. Barbara Gray represents him for commercial and industrial projects (as she does Mr. Eric Shepard, my husband- Dr. David Howard, and me). Mr. Fox is to receive SAG rates and residuals for his work. You can see this commercial on the following Web site, http://www.quiznos.com/commercials/2006/200607_brisket_30.wmv, with its twist like the Chick Fil-A commercials. (More and more our students and alumni are finding good agents to represent them and to send them to auditions for work in t.v., film, industrials, and commercials…). Mr. Fox is also currently performing in the King and I at Temple Civic Theater. http://www.artstemple.com/ . He is to direct Les Miserables, our fall production at the Cultural Activities Center, for performances in Nov. You may earn Production or Dramatic Activity credit for participation in the fall production. See http://www.dianehoward.com/syllabi.htm.
