Textbook:
Enhanced by Technology: A Practical Guide to Distance Communication by Diane Howard, Ph.D., published by McGraw-Hill

Mission Statement: In alignment with the university's mission statement, the goal of this course is to train skillful communicators and speech performance leaders, who demonstrate effective skills in distance communication as they serve in a global society while exercising faith-based discernment.

Course Purpose and Goal:
Students will demonstrate effective communication via common, current e-technologies.

Capstone Course: This is a writing and speaking capstone course for Performance Majors.  At the end of the course, students will publically present their e-portfolios, which include work samples and references to Performance Studies training and projects in the Performance Studies courses.

Student Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

  1. Students will communicate effectively via e-mail.
  2. Students will communicate effectively within virtual groups, communities, social networks.
  3. Students will communicate via effective Web pages.
  4. Students will demonstrate effective distance teaching and mentoring skills.
  5. Students will participate in viable projects and curriculum for distance education.
  6. Students will demonstrate effective communication skills for videoconferences.
  7. Students will develop components for an effective e-portfolio.
  8. Students will develop an effective online blog.
  9. Students will develop skillful digital voice files.
  10. Students will demonstrate effective communication via cameras in stand-up journalism.
  11. Students will develop effective PowerPoint presentations
  12. Students will develop a Christian philosophy of effective communication in a global society
  13. Students will demonstrate skillful communication in a final presentation on effective communication via e-technologies.

     

Course Methods and Requirements:

  1. Students will complete assigned reading.
  2. Students will communicate via e-mail.
  3. Students will communicate via virtual groups and/or communities.
  4. Students will research and study samples of effective Web sites.
  5. Students will produce an effective web site utilizing modern technologies.
  6. Students will teach and mentor at a distance.
  7. Students will communicate effectively via cameras for videoconferences and stand-up journalism.
  8. Students will develop online blogs and digital voice files.
  9. Students will develop an e-portfolio.
  10. Students will develop PowerPoint presentations.
  11. Students will develop a faith-based philosophy of effective communication in a global society.

 

Course Outline: By Class Meetings, Specific Criteria on LMS (My Campus) & In Class

  1. First Class Meeting- Introduction to Communication & Media Studies Dept., Performance Studies,  Course, and Participants; Read Preface & Ch. 1; Find Examples of Poor and Effective Web sites; Create Frontpage for e-portfolio using Weebly.com or another website builder.
     
  2. Students will study Web site communication; Discuss Preface and Ch. 1 ; Analyze Examples of Poor and Effective Web sites; Begin work on E-Portfolios; Read Ch. 2
     
  3. Students will develop and post resumes on E-Portfolios
     
  4. Students will write and post bios on E-Portfolios
     
  5. Students will study write and post blogs on E-Portfolios
     
  6. Students will study and demonstrate effective e-mail communication; Discuss Ch. 2; Continue work on E-Portfolios; Demonstrate Effective E-mail Practice; Read Ch. 3
     
  7. Mid-Term & Students will study and demonstrate effective communication via virtual groups and social networking; Continue work on E-Portfolios; Demonstrate Effective E-Group Communication; Read Ch. 3 & 4
     
  8. Students will study and demonstrate distance, educational facilitation; Discuss Ch. 4; Prepare for e-job applications;  Continue work on E-Portfolios;  Read. Ch. 5 & 6
     
  9. Students will practice and demonstrate effective communication and presentation for videoconferences and e-interviews; Work with Ch. 5, 6, and Appendix B in textbook; Develop digital voice files for e-portfolios and podcasts
     
  10. Students will practice effective communication with cameras with stand-up journalism.
     
  11. Students will demonstrate effective online writing and publishing; Complete E-Portfolios; Read philosophies of effective communication in a global society 
     
  12. Students post philosophies of effective communication in a global society;  Post writing samples; Prepare to present E-Portfolios   
     
  13. Students will study effective PowerPoint Presentations;
    Present Final E-Portfolios
     
  14. Students will prepare for a final public presentation of effective communication via e-technologies and demonstrate effective use of PowerPoint in public speaking.
     
  15. Students will take written final examination and will dress rehearse
    final presentation.

Evaluation: Specific Criteria on LMS (My Campus) & In Class

One third of the final grade is based on required projects. One third is based on the following: responsibility, academic integrity, dependability, effort, time invested, and class attendance/participation. One third is based on exams and final presentation.


Appropriate Dress:  Modest Clothing,  no hats or flip-flop shoes

Please do not use Electronic Devices (smart phones for texting, laptops etc.)  during class discussions and presentations.

TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) Alignment

This curriculum is aligned with TEKS in Health, Science, and Technology Education.
It can be used at all levels with age-appropriate modifications.

Extra Credit for Special Event Participation:
Students can receive extra credit for participation in events from the following categories. They are personal marketing workshops, laboratory performances,
productions (on or off campus), and/or Humanities programs/events (see calendar).
